Making waves in marine research is what motivates Dr. Jerry Wiggert of The University of Southern Թͷ (USM) School of Ocean Science and Engineering (SOSE) to pursue his passions. Wiggert was appointed to the Ocean Studies Board (OSB), a unit of the Division on Earth and Life Studies of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. OSB explores the science, policies and infrastructure needed to understand, manage and conserve coastal and marine environments and resources.

Wiggert accepted his nomination to join a group of approximately 20 scientists from across the nation with diverse oceanographic backgrounds who provide expertise in developing recommendations of marine science issues and identifying resource needs.

In addition to identifying critical topics to examine, the board conducts studies at the request of federal agencies, Congress or other sponsors. Recent topics have included the status of marine and coastal environments and the ocean’s role in the global climate system. These studies tend to be highly specialized, where one of the members’ tasks is to help recruit subject matter experts to join the subcommittees formed by the board.

Wiggert’s recent research focuses on developing hydrodynamic modeling applications that guide restoration efforts related to water quality impacts in coastal marine ecosystems. He hopes to further advance his research on a regional and global scale.

“This is such a great opportunity and I’m extremely excited about taking on this service to the ocean science community. There is a critical need for us to better understand the ocean and its role in our climate system,” said Wiggert.

In 2023, Wiggert helped secure accreditation for the SOSE from the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). This gold star accreditation ensures that SOSE’s programs meet industry standards and produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies.

SOSE Director Dr. Robert Leaf sees the immense value Wiggert brings to the board and SOSE program.

“SOSE extends our congratulations to Dr. Jerry Wiggert on his appointment to the National Academies' Ocean Studies Board. Dr. Wiggert's expertise and dedication to advancing our understanding of coastal and marine environments will be invaluable as the board continues its work in shaping the future of ocean science and policy. His leadership will no doubt help drive the innovative research and solutions needed to address the complex challenges facing our oceans and coasts today,” said Leaf.

Wiggert said he is proud to represent USM on the OSB and believes this opportunity will strengthen ocean research efforts. He also expressed his gratitude for his SOSE colleagues and their commitment to forming students into future innovators, researchers and Blue Economy contributors.

“I am truly grateful for this opportunity to represent USM and the Gulf coast region, and I look forward to taking on this tremendous responsibility,” said Wiggert.
